A trauma and violence-informed approach recognize the connections between violence, trauma, behaviours and health. These approaches increase safety, control and resilience for people who are seeking services in relation to experiences of violence, or have a history of violence.

The following are key principles towards this approach:

  1. Understand trauma and violence, and their impacts on peoples’ lives and behaviours
  2. Create emotionally and physically safe environments
  3. Foster opportunities for choice, collaboration and connection
  4. Provide a strengths-based and capacity-building approach to support client coping and resilience

Eagle’s Nest Stoney Family Shelter History

The Eagle’s Nest Stoney Family Shelter exists today thanks to the work done by the Stoney Tribal Council in the early 1990s. Concerned about the growing problem of violence within our community, the Stoney Tribal Council launched a study looking into the depths of family violence. This study, “Voices of the People”, took place in June 1990. Various members of the community were interviewed to determine the prevalence of family violence.

Through the study, it was clear the magnitude of the problem of family violence within our community was such that immediate, professional action was required.

The study recommended a family shelter be created.

Stoney Tribal Council worked together with Stoney Social Service to make the shelter a reality. The shelter was named Eagle’s Nest Stoney Family Shelter and opened its doors to families in January 1992.
